Breaking Your Family’s Cycle of Violence with Indrani Goradia
FROM A CONVERSATION WITH INDRANI GORADIA ON THE REINVENT YOURSELF PODCAST
Goradia says she grew up with yelling, screaming, and physical violence at home and thought that was the way it was. Then she had a child and “realized I didn’t want to hurt this 6 week old baby.” She tried six therapists until she found the right person to help her implement the “dream of the way I’d like to be parented.” To share her learning, Goradia created the global foundation Raftcares.org (Resilience for Advocates Through Foundational Training) so that anyone can listen to her free classes and break these terrible cycles. Or you can start with “The Power of a Positive No” by William Ury, one of her favorite tools.
Indrani’s Top Tips for Reinvention
- Back into what your soul and spirit require.
If you knew you only had a month to live, what would you regret not doing? And that’s not morose, that is dreaming. I think the fastest way to get there is to start a gratitude practice every single day. Start writing what you would do if you had all the time in the world and all the resources in the world. Because in those answers is the kernel of truth about what your soul and spirit really wants. - Take small steps towards a big dream.
The first thing you do is you keep your job. Keep your job as you are looking at your budget. So if you are bringing in $10 a month, and your expenses are $8 a month, those $2 are not enough to start something else. You have to look for something in the world that is somewhat aligned with what you want to do. Do that as a side hustle. So maybe once a month you want to volunteer at this place that has something to do with what you want to do. But if you can afford to quit your job do that — but go slowly. It’s like training for a marathon – you don’t get up tomorrow and run 26 miles, you have to train.
