Must-Have Resources from Our Positive Mornings Coaching Sessions
The books, tools, and videos to help you move forward
Every Monday morning, starting March 23, CoveyClub has been coaching members (and visitors) on how to establish a positive attitude for the day during the COVID-19 crisis. Our wonderful Covey reinvention coaches Wendy Perrotti and Dana Hilmer are teaching, coaxing, and inspiring us to change our mindset. Often, they cite books that need reading or apps that can be tried to help you get there.
Here is their list of links to all the collateral material they have mentioned during these sessions.
You can sign up for the upcoming mornings which take place over the Zoom network at 9-10 AM EST, here.
Let us help you learn more, connect more, be more.
BOOKS
The ONE THING: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results, by Gary Keller
A fantastically simple formula for getting and staying productive. What’s more, Keller’s focusing question, “What’s the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” functions as a prioritization starting point for every area of your life.
Your Brain at Work, by David Rock
Billed as “strategies for overcoming distraction, regaining focus and working smarter all day long,” this book absolutely delivers. You’ll learn how to use your brain’s innate functioning to master your mind’s output. I especially loved Rock’s explanation of the ways we can best set ourselves up for creativity and innovation.
Being Happy: You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Live a Richer, Happier Life, by Tal Ben-Shahar
If you have perfectionist tendencies this is a book you’ll want to read. In Being Happy, Ben-Shahar gives you the theory and tools needed to help you accept life as it actually is instead of how you think it should be. By using the science of positive psychology, Ben-Shahar shows you how to escape the rat race and begin living a life of serenity, happiness, and fulfillment.
Positivity: Top-Notch Research Reveals the 3 to 1 Ratio That Will Change Your Life, by Barbara Fredrickson, Ph.D.
Dr. Fredrickson shows us how a positivity ratio of 3:1 (or a bit higher) transforms how you show up in the world and what you focus on. And the good thing is it doesn’t take a lot of time. It only requires you to be intentional. In Positivity, you’ll learn to see new possibilities, bounce back from setbacks, connect with others, and become the best version of yourself.
Everything is Figureoutable, by Marie Forleo
Our beliefs dictate every action we take, and in this book the smart and always relatable Marie Forleo challenges us to embrace one fundamental belief — that “everything is figureoutable!” In the words of Cheryl Strayed, “Everything is Figureoutable” is a must-read for anyone who wants to face their fears, fulfill their dreams, and find a better way forward.”
Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead, by Brené Brown
Brené explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity. She shares that being vulnerable is not an option. We all are vulnerable. The only option is whether or not we choose to engage with that vulnerability, and that is an act of courage.
Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love & Wisdom, by Rick Hanson, Ph.D.
In this book Dr. Hanson shares how the brain is velcro for the negative and teflon for the positive, and he reveals how the flow of thoughts actually sculpts the brain. By combining breakthroughs in neuroscience with insights from thousands of years of contemplative practice, you too can use your mind to shape your brain for greater happiness, love, and wisdom.
VIDEOS
“TED Talk – The Power of Vulnerability” by Brené Brown
This Ted Talk by Brené Brown is one of the most-watched and one of our favorites. Brené shares that vulnerability is not optional and that engaging with your vulnerability (versus hiding from it) will allow you to love, lead and dare greatly in all you do.
Brené Brown: The Call to Courage – Netflix Special
This Netflix documentary provides a wonderful introduction to and overview of Brené’s work. With humor and empathy, Brené discusses what it takes to choose courage over comfort in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty.
